Get more greens into your diet.
I’ve always loved Spinach, even as a kid, but after learning the incredible benefits of green leafy vegetables, I decided to add even more to my diet.
Apart from adding spinach to salads, and steaming or lightly frying it as a side, it makes for a powerful smoothie! I’ve never been much of a smoothie person, but decided to start adding them to my diet, as a way to give my body an extra boost of essential micronutrients.
Homemade natural supplement.
When you make the smoothie, you’re breaking the food down by blending it. So, your body doesn’t need to do as much work and absorbs the nutrients a lot quicker. And so, by drinking a fresh smoothie made with green leafy vegetables, your body is getting an easy boost of important micronutrients that are vital for optimal health. For this reason, I see smoothies as one of nature’s natural supplements 🙂
Simple, natural and nutritious.
You get some pretty complicated smoothie recipes out there with all kinds of crazy ingredients. This smoothie, like most recipes on this blog, focuses on keeping it simple.
The four ingredients are Spinach, Banana, Chia Seeds and Coconut Water. Spinach is the star of the show, but the other ingredients pack a punch too.
Bananas contain a good amount of Potassium, an essential mineral that helps maintain a healthy balance of fluids in the body. They also promote healthy digestion, heart health and are considered to be mood-enhancing. Read more about the benefits of bananas here.
Chia seeds offer a massive amount of nutrients for very few calories and are a great source of protein. Read more about the benefits of chia seeds here.
So, for the 10 minutes it takes you to add these 4 ingredients to a blender and drink up, it’s time well spent! Especially if you’re run down and your body needs a little extra tlc, this is a wonderful option.
Tips to make it just right:
Pre-soak your Chia Seeds – You can add chia seeds, as they come, to your smoothie. However, pre-soaking them makes their nutrients a lot easier to absorb. Simply mix one quarter cup chia with one cup water (4 to 1 ratio), and leave to soak. You can leave them to soak overnight, or for a couple of hours before. I like to make a batch and then keep them in a glass jar in the fridge, making it easy to add a few tablespoons to a smoothie or a breakfast bowl when I need them.
Use Pure Coconut Water – Sadly, most coconut waters and milk have additives and sugar added to them. Be sure to check the ingredients list, and get the purest coconut water you can find. Note: You could use a milk instead if preferred.
Wash your Spinach thoroughly – Spinach is part of the Dirty Dozen list, meaning that it often gets sprayed with pesticides directly onto the parts we eat. So, if you can, buy organic Spinach (without chemicals), or just make be sure to wash your spinach thoroughly.
