Raw Almonds
I recently wrote a blog post on where to find vitamins and minerals in food. Something that stood out to me was how often almonds and nuts popped up. Oh yes, these crunchy delights are packed with essential nutrients and need to be eaten 🙂
Almonds have a good amount of Vitamin B2, B3 and E. Lots of Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc and more. Little powerhouses they are!
Food as medicine
I’ve been working a lot lately. It’s a new phase of my life since leaving the 9-5. It’s been a journey of discovery and learning a lot of new things all at once.
While it’s been a productive and inspiring time, it’s also been challenging with very little time for myself to rest and relax. Lately, I’ve started to feel it. Waking up abnormally tired, frequent blurry vision, and just all around not-100%.
It hits me on the weekend especially, when I finish the busy week.
And so, this Saturday I woke up feeling out-of-sorts and decided I needed to make some changes. Food and relaxation.
Food is always the first thing I look at when feeling under-the-weather. We are, after all, one chemical reaction. So, when you nourish yourself with delicious nutritious foods, you’ll feel it.
And so, I decided that I needed to get back onto the food-wagon to feel better.
Bananas and nuts are 2 of my go-to healthy foods. They’re easy to eat and packed with goodness. Just these two ingredients alone offer a big dose of vitamins and minerals.
And so, a delicious smoothie with bananas and almonds was in order – A double whammy of goodness!
Easy and nutritious smoothie recipe
While I am a health-conscious person, I am also always looking for simple solutions to eating better. I just love the kind of recipe where you have fewer ingredients and fewer steps. But, you still get a whack of essential nutrients.
This smoothie recipe only has 5 ingredients. Raw almonds, banana, almond milk, vanilla extract and cinnamon.
It’s also ridiculously easy to make. It’s worth getting yourself a blender, as you’ll get great use out of it. Simply throw in all the ingredients, blend, and drink!
Everyone has their own preferences, so play around with the dosages to find your perfect blend. If you find my recipe is too thick, just add more almond milk or water. And if you want it thicker, add less milk.
That’s what’s so great about smoothies. You can mix and match all kinds of ingredients. When you’re next at the grocery store, look out for good-looking fruits and veggies and try different combinations.
This time around I just wanted Almonds and Bananas, but Pineapple would be an amazing addition too. The options are endless.
An easy smoothie is great to have when you’re feeling run-down, over-worked, tired, and drained. Firstly, a smoothie is easy to make so it doesn’t add any extra pressure. Secondly, it’s a glass of much-needed essential nutrients to help you feel better. It’s a winning health boost you likely need.
Whether you’re feeling on top of the world or down in the dumps, this delicious and nutritious smoothie is the perfect no-hassle pick-me-up.
Tips to make it just right
Use ripe bananas as they are easier to digest and contain more antioxidants. Here is an article on ripe vs unripe bananas.
Use raw almonds. I always assumed that raw almonds were better than roasted, but apparently, there isn’t the biggest difference. Here is an article on raw vs roasted almonds. Both are good for you, but I always opt for as natural as possible. Au naturel baby.
Choose your almond milk wisely, as many have added sugars. Look for one that is unsweetened and as close to natural as possible. When picking an almond milk, go straight to the ingredients list and see if there is sugar on the list. That means they’ve literally added sugars to the mix, which is not ideal. Look for an almond milk that doesn’t have any added sugars.
If you can, use vanilla extract instead of vanilla essence. Vanilla extract is normally a natural product, and Vanilla essence is normally a chemically produced vanilla flavouring. I didn’t know the difference between vanilla extract and essence before. Essence is usually cheaper, but if you can, opt for Extract and go as natural as possible.
Keep a few almonds for garnish. This is a little tip but makes a big difference. For each smoothie, I keep about 3 or 4 almonds. Then I cut them roughly and sprinkle on top afterwards. That way, as you sip, you get crunchy surprises along the way. Yum 🙂
